Nihongo no Kokoro Part 130

Kikkake

きっかけ

Anyone who’s ever studied the Japanese language has been asked what their “kikkake” for learning it is. “Kikkake” is the thing that either spurs us to start something or enables us to meet someone. It is apparently derived from combining the words “kiru (to end)” and “kakeru (to begin)” with the connotation of the ending of something being also the start of something new.

Among my students, many started learning the language due to their interest in travelling to Japan and in anime. What made you become interested in the language enough to want to know more about it?
