Nihongo no Kokoro Part 115

Rui wa tomo wo yobu (Ruitomo)

類は友を呼ぶ(るいとも)

Most of my friends are also drinking buddies. In Japanese, we call this, “Rui wa tomo wo yobu,” or “ruitomo,” short. This is what we say when people with common interests or traits come together.

Of course, there is a lot to learn from people with different interests and whose personality differs wildly from our own, but there’s something to be said about simply being able to hang out with people who are just like you.

On that note, I should probably say that my character is closer to that of a Malaysian, whom by nature tends to be more relaxed and easygoing, than I am with a typical Japanese, whose thinking is more rigid. That is probably why I’m still here, even after so many years.
