Sushi Koi - Modern Masterpieces

Around two months ago, Sushi Koi opened its doors in Petaling Jaya, with a promise to give sushi a fresh, unique experience to a younger audience. You can feel it as soon as you step into its doors – the decor is more like a modern cafe than a sushi restaurant, with bright but warm lighting, wall sockets for laptops and smartphones, and cozy chairs. But what about the food?

Standing out from the competition, Sushi Koi’s menu is an exquisite twist to the usual formula, putting their dizzying array of premium ingredients to good use, from French cheese to Taiwanese eel. The man behind this smorgasbord of flavors is a chef with more than twenty years of experience, which includes the preparation of omakase dishes. To say I’d be excited to show you what Sushi Koi has to offer would be a bit of an understatement, as I was pleasantly surprised by some of the bestselling dishes they recommended.

For starters, the Unagi Foie Gras was something I didn’t expect to find in a sushi restaurant. It certainly was a spectacle to behold – foie gras laid on top of delectable slices of unagi, decorated with anchovies and cherry tomatoes, served with truffles, caviar, as well as a special sauce that’s made in-house. The foie gras was chewy and fragrant, and the unagi was savory and full of texture. A dish that you really shouldn’t miss!

Fans of teppanyaki would be impressed by their crowd-pleasing Gyu Hire Teppanyaki Set, which is just out of this world – you would definitely agree once you taste their juicy beef tenderloin, which is sure to satisfy any meat lovers out there. Your mouth will definitely water from the very first bite!

We managed to interview the head chef himself, Chef Taketoshi Minami. He was kind enough to share with us his 20-plus years of experience in the hospitality industry, and how he has expanded his knowledge and improved his culinary skills, especially in Japanese cuisine. Before we ended our visit, we indulged in the sweet desert named “Monaka” (Wafers with Vanilla Ice Cream). This dessert is highly recommended for cleansing your palette after your savory meal, right before you depart.

We were greatly satisfied by the meal. The food was high quality, with appropriate portions, and prepared upon order. Kogetsu is, without a doubt, one of the best spots to check out if you are looking for Japanese cuisine that’s worth it’s weight in gold.
