On to our third straight review of takeaway ramen! Today’s fine establishment is Tomo Ramen Bar, the brainchild of two ramen lovers with eyes for uniques twists on ramen.

Tomo Ramen Bar is a ramen restaurant-cum-bar that first opened its doors in early November 2019. According to one of the two founders, Chef Kent, breaking away from convention is key – from the cozy, modern-style interior, to their signature soy milk ramen broth. The idea was inspired by the different kinds of “unconventional” ramen the founders have seen from their travels abroad, although great care was taken to ensure that Tomo Ramen’s menu is equal parts unique and delicious.

The two most popular ramen dishes are their Miso Soymilk Tomo Ramen, their signature ramen in miso soymilk broth, and their Tonkotsu Ramen, which is ramen noodles served in pork bone broth. The soymilk used in the broth was exactly as advertised – creamy and rich, with a hint of sweetness that’s too strong so it doesn’t overpower the flavor of the other ingredients. I was pleasantly surprised from the first bite. Adding ginger and chilli flakes to the ramen only enhanced the flavor of the broth, so I highly recommend doing that as well. The char siew pork belly was crispy outside, soft inside, which went well with the broth and the noodles. Vegetarian diners can request it be replaced by vegetarian toppings, so the Miso Soymilk Tomo Ramen is an experience that can be enjoyed even by those who don’t eat meat.

The Tonkotsu Ramen is no slouch either; its noodles served in a pork bone broth that ‘s boiled for over 20 hours. Equally creamy and rich with the aroma only high quality pork can provide, soaked by the springy ramen noodles, this ramen would appeal to afficianados of meat lovers of all stripes.

Not even the usual issues that would bring down the experience of takeaway ramen could put a damper on the enjoyment of Tomo Ramen Bar’s offerings, which I think is a testament to the quality of their ingredients and the care they put into their menu. For those who want more than ramen, Tomo Ramen Bar has a variety of sides to choose from, like gyoza, mentaiko fries, and luncheon meat with mentaiko sauce.
Here’s to hoping we can all return to sit-in dining soon, if not so we can enjoy Tomo Ramen Bar’s ramen while it’s fresh and piping hot!
