Kushi Naka Naka -
Skewers and Noodles

Kushi Naka Naka is a yakitori-plus-ramen restaurant that sits in the middle of the affluent Plaza Damas complex, surrounded by upscale cafes and restaurants where it feels right at home. The brand is a sister name to Johor Bahru’s famous, Tokyo Kibou-ken ramen store (itself a 25-year-old franchise in Japan), which means ramen aficionados here in KL can now enjoy their selection of tasty noodles without having to make the 330-kilometer trip south.

The interior is cozily, dimly lit; a reprieve from the afternoon sun as people working nearby trickle in looking for their lunch. Kushi Naka Naka originally only opened in the evenings, as their main clientele were people looking to unwind after a hard day of work, but the current Covid situation and change in customer habits meant it was time to adapt. The attractive prices for their lunch and dinner sets do nothing to hurt their popularity.

The star of this review is their Tonkotsu Charsiew Ramen (RM36.30), an appetizing bowl of noodles with a ring of thin charsiew slices around the side. You can go straight for the meat before tackling the noodles or drop them all into the broth to soak up the flavor (like I did). The daring presentation belies a surprisingly subtle taste – the broth is clear, with a fragrance that isn’t overwhelming, and the charsiew slices practically melt in your mouth. The noodles are springy and light, which goes along quite nicely with the onsen egg and the brown fungus.

While Kushi Naka Naka has plenty of ramen dishes on their menu, their core offerings are still their yakitori dishes. The types of skewers on sale are a dizzying assortment of chicken, fish and pork – from regular favorites like pork belly and chicken fillet with wasabi, to more exotic ones like chicken skin and liver. The yakitori is always prepared on the spot, to ensure thefreshness and taste of the meat. This dedication also extends to the rest of their dishes, as Kushi Naka Naka doesn’t offer takeaway options. Everything to preserve the quality and taste of their food.

Kushi Naka Naka has something for everyone – aside from ramen and yakitori, they also have rice bowls (donburi), snacks like fried chicken and gyoza, and even curry dishes. Whether you feel like ramen for lunch to soothing low-fi music, or unwinding with yakitori and alcohol for dinner, you definitely won’t be disappointed!
