JFKL October 2014

THE WEEKEND JAPANESE FILM SHOW “Death of a Japanese Salesman”

The title of the JFKL (The Japanese Foundation Kuala Lumpur) Weekend Japanese Film Show in October will be “Death of a Japanese Salesman”. The documentary focuses on Mami Sunada’s own 67-yearold father, who was diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer shortly after retiring from a company he worked for over four decades. This threw an unexpected and grave wrench into the plans of the often meticulous wheeler and dealer. His fi nal days were spent making an ending note, a memorandum for the family of the deceased that is increasingly picking up speed among the elderly in Japan. Mami’s feature-length debut was a commercial and critical success, winning fi lm festival prizes in Chicago, Dubai and Sydney. The Japan Times described it as one of the top ten best local films of the year, praising the director for providing “an unflinching, unsentimental view of the dying process”.
