Fans of Makoto Shinkai will rejoice as The Japan Foundation Kuala Lumpur (JFKL) will be bringing two of the director’s most widely-celebrated works to the big screen for the November edition of the Weekend Japanese Film Show. The 41-year-old Nagano native, who rose to fame with the award-winning short fi lm “She and Her Cat” in 1999, followed it up with the release of the similarly-successful “Voices of a Distant Star”. The sci-fi romance chronicles the long-distance relationship between two young lovers separated by an intergalactic war with a hostile race of aliens. Both attempts to maintain contact via phone, but as the confl ict rages on deeper into space, their messages go from months to years in transmission. Shinkai continued to establish his trademark animation quality and character development over the years, with “The Garden of Words” being his latest effort. The movie depicts the unlikely bond between an aspiring shoemaker and a mysterious woman formed over chance meetings on rainydays. However, the end of the rainy season also spells the end of their encounters, leaving many things unsaid between them. The Weekend Japanese Film Show has been organised by JFKL. The programme takes place every fi rst Saturday of the month. All fi lms are presented in Japanese with English subtitles.
