What is Fugu?
Fugu is the Japanese word for Puffer fi sh and famous as a seasonal fi sh among Japanese. Fugu season runs through January and February, and it is one of the most expensive delicacies in Japan. Fugu can be lethally poisonous due to its tetrodotoxin. Therefore, it must be carefully prepared to remove toxic parts and to avoid contaminating the meat. The restaurant preparation of fugu is strictly controlled by law in Japan.

Fugu is mainly served as sashimi and chirinabe, Japanese style steamboat. Other than those, there are deep fried, grilled, and Shirakoae, milt in a sauce.

Fugu from Shimonoseki
Shimonoseki is the city located in Yamaguchi Prefecture, the southwestern tip of Honshu. Shimonoseki is the largest harvester of Fugu in Japan, so it is called “Fugu Capital”. The Haedomari Market in Shimonoseki is the only Fugu market in Japan. Here you can witness the unique fukuro zeri, bag-bidding. The bidding is conducted in secret and hidden from view! Fugu Nigiri-sushi can be tried out at the Karato Market in Shimonoseki.
