Theatre Watch in Japan ~Bunraku~

Bunraku, Japan’s traditional puppet theatre, has a history of more than 300 years. It has since been inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The uninitiated would usually dismiss an attendance deeming it would be too sophisticated, diffi cult to absorb and understand and, to top it off, the admission would be too expensive! The bold however will be rewarded with enchanting, captivating entertainment which will instantly disprove all that. One will be instantly mesmerized by the emotional narration of the Tayu (narrator) recounting the action, the playful, lifting accompaniment of the 3-stringed shamisen and especially the amazing, magical, lifelike feminine movements of the female puppets brought to life by the puppeteers. Pretty, delicate, graceful, gorgeous, dynamic and funny …….. lets go watch Bunraku !
