Its northern part is facing to Genkainada and southern part is facing to Ariakekai, which are well-known ocean in Japan. Those two parts are famous for not only fresh seafood such as crabs and squids, but Saga beef and Saga jidori (chicken). Karatsu city is located northern part of Saga and has been known as a trading port since Tou period. Tou is the previous name of current China and Korea. Tou and Karatsu are written in the same way in Chinese character. And that’s how people started to call the place Karatsu as the trading port with China and Korea. In Karatsu, there are some historical sites such as Karatsu-jo (a castle) which was built by a general Hideyoshi Toyotomi’s subordinates and traditional pottery called Karatsu-yaki.
