A Trip to Shochu Brewery in Kagoshima Prefecture, Kyushu


A trip to Kyushu becoming easier now. With Kyushu Bullet Train started to operate, it takes only 1 hour and 20 minutes of journey from Fukuoka to Kagoshima. Kagoshima is famous for its spectacular scenery where Sakura-Jima is clearly visible from the city. Not to forget, a historical Shimazu and Satsuma domain that made great history during Edo-period. Surrounded by a sea, that rich of seafood like Unagi (eel), Katsuo (bonito), seafood lovers will not have diffi culty enjoying their favourite dishes. Kagoshima (Satsuma) is also famous for Shochu (Distilled spirits). Approximately there are 113 Shochu brewery located in Kagoshima, where it generates an estimated 40% of the Shochu industry in Japan. Here, various types of Shochu is produced, which is not only made from potatoes, but rice, barley, buckwheat and brown sugar. Enjoying Shochu can be in various ways too, not limited to the traditional way in which it is served with hot water or with ice. Shochu can also be enjoyed in the form of a cocktail. Visiting Shochu factory and trying different ways to enjoy the taste became very popular and one of must do activities in Kyushu.
